I made this Vine (poly)rhythm drum machine http://146bpm.com/ as an afternoon hack last weekend. It would be fun to be able to sequence musical loops like this in a timeline into a composition. Timing would need to be tight; I foresee some future hacks with Web Audio API that could make sample-perfect AV loops possible.

"The source files stay exactly where they are, addressable by HTTP."

I don't know anything about Popcorn but doesn't this mean that your video will break (or have at least gaps) when someone removes the file from Youtube or wherever it is hosted. The media-equivalent of a dead link, so to say?

This is a great example of the utility and importance of Popcorn. In fact, I'd venture to say this is the first time I "got" popcorn -- it's more than a demo app for HTML5 video.

I'm a little disappointed at the choice of subject matter, though. I know absolutely nothing about Toronto politics, but it (and use of the shock-word "jackass") distracts from the point of your post, and I think if I were a Toronto resident I would find it much more distracting.

Great post, Ben.

I totally agree re: making web making intuitive and fun is the right path.

As you say, you can do this through software *or* learning programs. More importantly: I think you can do it even better when you fuse software and learning together.

It's this fusion that can be Mozilla's special sauce: inventing software with the web makers, iterating while we teaching, engaging in addition to shipping.

This is something that Apple never did. It makes a big difference.

As much as I love the idea, I'll probably be boycotting popcorn.js until Firefox gains a "Save As... HTML (Complete)" that doesn't mangle the DOM and JS of rich content.

It's just too much hassle to manually download Javascript-based stuff using standalone tools and it's my policy to only read/watch/listen to what I can archive. (And popcorn.js has the potential to penalize me a LOT more than disabling annotations on YouTube)

I love this idea. I would love to be a part of it. I am an IT professional with experience in infrastructure for University systems, a volunteer with kids in the realms of technology, recently accepted a position as a programmer, and the new volunteer coordinator for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) team here in my local "Small/big city."

I would truly love to get my 2 cents in and help out in such a broad community endeavor. Good on ya for putting this together!

Hey Ben- great work and ideas here. We have been working on this concept at the Learning Networks too and I am eager to see this evolve with Mozilla. I agree that it needs to be distributed. People and orgs have their own internal systems and websites for documenting and developing their work, and that needs to be respected. A leaderboard is a great idea- because in general, for an open project to succeed- someone needs to step up and really take ownership of the work. Although you stress simple, when we surveyed our membership on what tools they need for brainstorming and project development- many of the requests fell into the project management category (i.e- milestones, calendaring, roadmapping etc.)

+1 to making the wireframe clickable!

Being able to see what is live and what isn't would be very cool. Allows people to know what requires collaboration and support and also highlights those that have been successful.

A good idea and one I'm sure I'll have a butchers at soon.

Can you make the wireframes clickable so we can see in detail?

The killer feature here is certainly that it is distributed - if I want to make a detailed post on my blog, it will listen for it on the OIC site.

+1 to Lisa that a leaderboard will help.

Bravo, bravissimmo to this project! In terms of feedback, I'd say that Ideascale.com has a wonderful easy-to-use interface but of course does not scale -- without having to pay for it. (That's your opportunity!) But the platform underlying MyStarbucksidea is certainly worthy of research. What makes that work is the different leaderboards: a topic leaderboard and the recent ideas leaderboard. What really completes the picture is their notation system of denoting projects "under review", "reviewed", "In the works" and "launched". This really gives participants a great confidence that the ideas can result in actual actions. IMHO you really have a winner if you can incorporate some of those concepts in your free platform!

Hey there Ben,

Some fun ideas here, indeed. I'm most interested in:

* The Snowball
* Geek Speed Dating
* Big Brother/Big Sister

... and I'm wondering how these could be incorporated into the trainings that will be part of <a href="http://nathanieljames.org/blog/2011/02/07/knight-mozilla-partnership/" rel="nofollow">MoJo</a>.

Food for thought.

Thanks for this fantastic presentation of Feedbacker. I'd love to talk to you sometime about this new "re-professional" degree we're developing, definitely not vanilla . . . I like your deep grasp of big ideas, and then how you make them clear, succinct, simple, appealing!

Great post Ben!

Another suggestion is to hijack a popular celebrity on twitter with lots of followers to help promote the next event. Stephen Fry here in England has a large following and has done a number of video promotions for FSF / FOSS. If we could have celebrities like Stephen posting out to a couple of million followers about the next Drumbeat event and asking his followers to RT the message to their followers that would be a big leg up.
